Meet the real Ramsay family

Mr John Ramsay was the Superintendent of Lord Hopetoun's lead mines.

His son Allan Ramsay was born in Leadhills in 1682 and was a Scottish Poet. He became first a wigmaker in Edinburgh. He produced a collection of poems in 1722. The volume was issued by subscription and brought in the sum of 400 guinees. Four years later he opened a circulating library - the first in Scotland. His eldest child was Allan Ramsay, the portrait painter.
